American Badger (Taxidea taxus)

It is found in the western and central United States, northern Mexico and central Canada, as well as in certain areas of southwestern British Columbia.Their habitat is typified by open grasslands with available prey (such as mice, squirrels, and groundhogs). They prefer areas with sandy loam soils where they can dig more easily for their prey, such as prairie regions. American badgers are largely nocturnal but have been reported active during the day as well. They do not hibernate, but become less active in winter. The American badger is an aggressive animal and has few natural enemies. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_badger

Fisher (Martes pennanti)

It is a medium-size mammal native to North America. It is a member of the mustelid family, commonly referred to as the weasel family. The fisher is closely related to but larger than the American Marten (Martes americana). The fisher is a forest-dwelling creature whose range covers much of the boreal forest in Canada to the northern fringes of the United States. Names derived from aboriginal languages include pekan, pequam, and wejack. It is also sometimes referred to as a fisher cat, though it is not a feline. Fishers are omnivorous and feed on a wide variety of small animals and occasionally fruits and mushrooms. They show a preference for the snowshoe hare and are one of the few predators able to hunt porcupine. Despite their name, fishers seldom eat fish. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_%28animal%29

HuaTongOversea Blog Claim: Most of the photos in my Flickr were taken with my Canon 400D + Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Sometimes in order to describe something I do use a few photos I got from online, these photos will be marked and credited to the original owners if I know. From their web site:

Are People Still Looking for Their Lost ‘Katrina’ Pets?

by Laura Dedelow, May 26, 2006

True or False: It is not possible that anyone could be still looking for a pet at this point in New Orleans, eight months after Hurricane Katrina. "Bigtime FALSE!", says Pee Wee, who was recently reunited with the Pelas family. [...]

Pee Wee was actually found 30 miles south of his original home in St. Bernard. It is assumed that the water brought him that far south, and very close to being washed out into the Gulf of Mexico. Finally eight months after the storm including the time he was fostered at Robin's house for three months, Pee Wee and his family were reunited. How is this possible? Because of a group of devoted people on the streets of New Orleans and surrounding parishes, family pets survive despite the odds and live to be reunited with their families. Animal Rescue New Orleans volunteers have been working tirelessly to ensure the survival of these abandoned companion animals. Their people are still looking for them. They still need your help to survive on the streets or better yet to be placed in a loving foster home. Pee Wee was lucky. There are still thousands of animals on their own, looking for their family, scrounging for food to survive. If you would like to volunteer or make a donation, you can do so conveniently right here on our website. Working together we can make a difference.

See where this picture was taken. [?]

I’ve always had an affinity for black and white photography. There’s just something about it that I love, I can’t really put a finger on it. Maybe it’s the simplicity without all the busy colors or maybe it’s the fact that it really kind of forces you to use your imagination since color is completely out of the equation. Whatever it is, I know that I really like it. Although I’ve “published” some black and white work in the past on Flickr and other places – with Disney photos – the fact that A) Disney is so darn colorful, and B) the D300 makes such great color images, I’ve never had the nerve to really get into black and white. I’m starting this series really as kind of an experiment. If I’m pleased with the output the idea is to eventually create a coffee table book with all the “Wonderful World of Color - In Black & White” series photos.

So, I hope you all enjoy viewing these images as much as I do making them!

This is one of the VERY few animals that survived Hurricane Katrina at the Aquarium. Their rescued 250lbs sea turtle, the sea otters and penguins were the only other things to survive.

I apologize about the blur in the photo. These creatures have fins that move very fast and their tank is rather dark. It was extremely challenging to get a photo without any blur.

The weedy seadragon or common seadragon, is a marine fish related to the seahorse. It is the only member of the genus Phyllopteryx. Adult weedy seadragons are a reddish colour, with yellow and purple markings; they have small leaf-like appendages that provide camouflage and a number of short spines for protection. Males have narrower bodies and are darker than females. Seadragons have a long dorsal fin along the back and small pectoral fins on either side of the neck, which provide balance. Weedy seadragons can reach 45 cm in length.

The weedy seadragon is the marine emblem of the Australian State of Victoria

Okay, I'm really bad at naming photos. I used to agonize over what to call them. I've decided to just go with the first thing that comes to mind when I look at them. Unfortunately, on my first application of this rule the only thing I could think was, "Chomp, Chomp, Chomp, Chomp". Not a great start. This new photo naming method may just confirm that I have the mind of a child. I've also come to the conclusion that I've got a LOT of gorilla shots and am starting to run out of things to say about them. So, if you want to know more about my take on these incredible animals, and see more photos, click on the "Mountain Gorillas" category.

How do you guys go about naming your photos?

Fennec Foxes are my favourite animal at Drusillas Park zoo. They are just so cute, I can sit and watch the Fennec Foxes all day, especially when they have their sweet little babies. Baby Fennec Foxes actually have small ears more like a kittens. In some countries Fennec's are kept as pets, but although they are cute, they are amazingly good at digging tunnels, so very good at escaping from peoples gardens. An edited version of this photo is up on display at Drusillas in the corridor by the Squirrel Monkeys, its in the bit where you have to guess the Drusillas animal by its close up.

Most animals will have a routine in the wild, like flight paths to and from a nest, typical feeding or play times, etc. at zoos, animals tend to have routes they travel within an enclosure. Practice watching behaviour, envisioning the shot you'd like to make, and then let the animal come to you.

This is a great way to practice being patient as well. And, the longer you stay at an enclosure, the better chance you'll have of getting yourself into proper position for the shot. Most visitors will simply stop, point, take a picture, and walk away.

Sans berets, smocks or palettes, the animals at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are getting their paws dirty with non-toxic, water-based paint and creating one-of-a-kind works of art. Painting is one among many activities that fall under Animal Enrichment—a program that provides physically and mentally stimulating activities and environments for the Zoo’s residents. The animals have the opportunity not only to choose how to behave, but also to use their natural abilities and behaviors in new and exciting ways.

Enrichment is an integral part of the daily care of the species in the Zoo’s collection. Keepers and curators carefully study animal behavior and determine what kinds of enrichment are appropriate for each species and, occasionally, individual animals. Keepers have a number of novel options for enrichment. They may alter an exhibit; train an animal; introduce new smells, sounds, foods, and objects; or enlist an animal in a research project, such as a study about foraging skills or cognitive research. Adding a variety of engaging activities helps keepers ensure the Zoo’s animals have a high quality of life.

Though the subjects of the animals’ paintings remain mysterious, the ways visitors can support the Zoo’s enrichment program are as clear as a starry, starry night. Drop off any size canvas, art paper, paint brush or non-toxic, water-based paint at the Visitor Center for the animal care staff to distribute. Animal keepers are collecting gifts for the animals this holiday season. Browse the list of needed items on the Enrichment Giving Tree section of the Zoo’s website or the Enrichment page of the Zoo’s online store.

Art produced by many of the Zoo’s mammal and bird residents will be available for purchase at the National Capital chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) Art Show, which will take place spring 2012.

1966 Lincoln Continental

National Lampoon's Animal House is a 1978 comedy film directed by John Landis. It's based on stories written by Chris Miller and published in National Lampoon magazine. The film is about a misfit group of fraternity boys that takes on the system at their college.

It is considered to be the movie that launched the gross-out genre, although it was predated by several films now also included in the genre. Produced on a small .7 million budget, the film has turned out to be one of the most profitable movies of all time. Since its initial release, Animal House has garnered an estimated return of more than 1 million in the form of video and DVDs, not including merchandising. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. (Info from Wikipedia)

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks! I consider myself very lucky to have a network of great photographers around the world. I met most of them through Flickr, where we are constantly commenting and giving feedback on one another's photos. This has enabled me to meet up with great photographers wherever I travel, and they are great people to hang out with because they already know the prettiest places around where they live!

One of the people I was lucky to shoot with was Rebekka in Iceland. We met at a coffee shop in Reykjavik and talked about where to go shoot. We jumped in her car and drove a while until we reached a fjord. Nearby were these horses running around like wild beasts. They have no fear of humans, and we were able to go right up to them. Their hair is very long, and I'm sure it evolved from the hyper-cold whipping winds around the edges of the sea.

I don't shoot a lot of animals, because I find it hard to improve upon what other great animal photographers have done in the past. However, here is a tip for shooting animals. It's kind of a lame trick, but it always works. Use a wide-angle lens and get in close. It always makes the head look really big and cute. Humans love big-headed animals and it always makes them smile. Why this is, I have no idea... Note this trick also kinda works with babies.

Seriously, thanks to Rebekka for a great day tooling around the fjords of Iceland.

Oh, and yes.... I have pictures of Rebekka coming up at some point wearing her green-thing ... nothing too salacious for public consumption, I assure you... but in more of a "photographer in her milieu" milieu.

The Tree of Life
photos of animals
Today it's just a simple shot of the Tree of Life. This is probably my favorite view of the tree, and apparently Disney thought enough of it to make it a (now defunct) Kodak Photo Spot.

I always find it a bit amusing, however, when sometimes I line up to take a shot, and the next thing I know there is someone looking over my shoulder with a P&S, iPhone, etc. to get the same shot. That happened a couple times while I was here, and seems to happen way more with the 5D3/7D (and, I was using a 70-200mm lens) than my little E-M5. It guess people still equate a big camera with someone that knows what they are doing. Occasionally it can result in some friendly banter, which, at times, can be fun to learn a few tidbits from fellow guests.

I also find it amusing that this is such a beautiful site, yet all the while knowing that the tree was constructed from an offshore oil-drilling rig!

Cruelty in Foie gras
photos of animals
Image by pickled_newt ( busy again on n off B)
This photo is attributed to the works of Jerry.

In view of posting a dish with Foie gras ,I did some reading about the latter .Although I have the idea of the cruel techniques inflicted on ducks to produce Fioe gras ,IMHO posting a picture of only the dish alone, and rant about force feeding ducks / geese makes the subject a bit limp / low impact .To highlight animal cruelty ,there's the need of a picture depicting the process of force feeding which I don't have. Then I spotted this brilliant photo of a duck or maybe goose being forced feed in wikipedia....

If " A picture speaks a thousand words " then this is it !

Imagine the duck in the picture as yourself , sure you would hate ,horrified by it.
It's a slow death .
